did the gold alloy vary? Is there an online catalog of the gold in US gold coins?

I just buy the gold Eagles which are pure gold { 24 K ) and 1 troy oz with no dollar value set .

Those are probably older and may have more value depending on condition .

Look in the yellow pages for coin shops and take it in .
They will have to see it to give you an assessment .

They are generally 24 karat gold. Unless you have bought some clad coins as collectors from some private mint companies. If so they are usually silver with gold plating and are stamped .999 silver clad.

The new eagles are 100% gold — 24 karat….
